UGP and the UCLA Grid Architecture bring computational clusters together into a Grid, The hardware resources making up the Grid consist entirely of computational clusters each of which consists of a head node, compute nodes, storage nodes, network resources, software, and data resources. Individual computational clusters can be quite large, containing hundreds of nodes. Local organizations own and maintain control of the resources involved, and local administrative procedures and security solutions take precedence.
The Architecuture implemented by UGP is hierarchical in that you can create a:
- Stand-Alone Grid (also called a Campus Grid)
- A two-level Grid Hierarchy which join multiple Grid Portals running UGP together.
Features of the design include:
- User Certificates are maintained by the Grid Portal. Users never handle their certificates.
- Two user types: Cluster Users and Pool-Only Users.
- Built-in workflow for Adding Users to the Grid, Adding Users to a Grid Hierarchy, changing their passowrds, adding clusters to users, etc.
- Pooled resources and Pool jobs.

- MyProxy Server
- A MyProxy server is maintained as part of the UC Grid Portal. Having a MyProxy Server is recommended but not required for the campus grid portals.
